I know I've complained about this before

From the New York Times sports section on the Web - when you click on "College Basketball" this is what you get - a page labeled 2006 NCAA Men's Tournament. I'm not sure where the women are. Oh wait, there is a little icon over in the right-hand sidebar. Thanks.

Here comes the Final Four

I haven't been able to get downtown but signs of the Final Four's arrival are popping up around the city. I saw a few city buses yesterday with 'Welcome NCAA" running across the front. I might try to take my 3-year-old in tomorrow to watch the open practices. The Globe has a decent spread in today's paper (my one gripe is that it was part of the sports section, not a pull-out. The pull-out today was the Red Sox.) Stan Grossfield who is both writer and photographer has a piece on LSU - you can read all the coverage here. My old employer the Boston Herald doesn't have much, sad to say.

Where did all the women coaches go?

This is a piece I wrote for Northeastern's Alumni magazine - I wrote it in the fall, but the issue just came out last week. I profile our three women head coaches (one just resigned) while also looking at the issue of women coaching at the collegiate level - the numbers, issues, etc.

Penn State's Coach Portland

The Boston Globe had a front page sports story yesterday on Coach Rene Portland who has been accused of discriminating against lesbian players on her basketball team. There was also a piece on the reacion of Penn State students

It's all about the dunk

The Salt Lake Tribune had a piece on why dunks are going to help women's hoops while Jason Whitlock at ESPN says the dunk is not a good idea

A women's golf blog

Hurray! Someone is blogging about women's golf! http://www.theforwardtees.com/

"Winning by losing"

Christine Brennan has a piece today in USAToday about how the recent upsets in the Women's NCAA tournament (e.g., Ohio State to B.C.) are signs of progess in the women's game. And she also points out some of the frustrations still felt by players, coaches, etc.

Women's Hoops Blog profiled on SI.com

Ted and Sara Sampsell-Jones  (and Eveylyn!), the keepers of the great Women's Hoops Blog were featured on SI.Com - congrats!

Redesigning the hijab for sports

An interesting piece in today's New York Times on how the UN refugee agency is working with corporate partners such as Nike to design a hijab that would be appropiate for Mulsim girls and women to wear while playing sports. The traditional hijab is long and flowy - not ideal for athletes. The piece profiles a group of women in a Somalian refugee camp who play volleyball.

Annika deserves more

Columnist Bob Buttitta at the Ventura County Star argues that Annika Sorenstam doesn't get the respect she deserves from golf fans and golf media. If Tiger Woods was swinging the way Sorenstam is, Buttitta says you would be hearing about it. He writes ...

"The amount of attention each superstar receives for his and her golf exploits shows how different each tour is perceived.

Men's professional golf  is a mainstream sport while women's professional golf is considered a niche sport.

That perception may or may not be true, but there's no denying that Sorenstam is the best female player ever to swing a golf club and her accomplishments need a higher level of recognition." (Ventura County Star, 3/19/06)
