Update

Well, I've been AWOL for a while. This semester has been a doozy. I'm actually presenting that paper I wrote about women's basketball blogs, message boards, etc. today at a conference here in Boston. It's the Popular Culture Association and they have a Sports division.  I've also finally finished a study on women's sports coverage in newspapers and submitted that for another conference. And after putting the book about the WNBA and the media to the side for a bit while I finished up those papers, I'm back to it. And once the semester ends in a few weeks, it will be all writing the book all the time!

More on Wimbeldon

A follow up to an earlier post: The Sports Frog blog argues that the women players at Wimbeldon should make even more than the men because they a play a better game.

I was led to this post from the Sports Law Blog - they have some great stuff on there if you don't already read it - particulary on racial issues.

Native Americans and sports

USA Today has an article on Native American tribes that own sports teams or invest in sport ventures  - including the Mohegan Tribe in Conn., which became the first non-NBA owner of a WNBA team - the Connecticut Sun (the team I followed this past summer for a book I'm working on about how the media covers women's sports).

Speaking of the Sun - they announced on Wed. that they are trading one of my favorite players - Taj McWilliams-Franklin - she's a class act. Sigh.

Learning something new every day

The New York Times profiles Yelena Isinbayeva - a Russian pole vaulter, who I had never heard of - and according to this piece, I'm not alone - she is pretty amazing and "has broken 19 world records (both indoor and outdoor) and won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens"

Road to Vancouver

I caught some of the U.S. women's national ice skating on Saturday. Great skaters, but all have issues, and the U.S. talent pool does seem light. Meissner squeaked out a win.

Serena wins :)

A nice wrap-up of Serena Williams triumph at the Australian Open in the New York Times. I love the pic they're running with this, showing the crush of photographers.

Exercised-induced asthma or not

USAToday has an interesting piece female athletes who've been diagnosed with exercise-induced asthsma, actually have a little-known breathing condidtion called vocal cord disorder (VCD).
